Thornton Tomasetti is the structural engineer for a 21-story, 238-foot-tall mass timber residential building in Milwaukee’s East Town neighborhood. The 410,000-square-foot, mixed-use building will contain 201 apartments, a pool on the sixth floor, and a top floor amenity level.
The mass timber residential floors are constructed above five levels of concrete parking garage. The mass timber system of glulam beams and columns support the engineered timber slabs. Two concrete cores ensure the lateral stability of the structure. The design exposes the mass timber construction wherever possible, while using the charring layer of wood for fire protection and displaying its natural qualities.
The building is designed to exceed Milwaukee’s energy conservation code requirements.
