Marking the first medical school to be established by a private hospital in Brazil, the Albert Einstein Education and Research Center (AEERC) features a skylit atrium that unites programming for medical, nursing, graduate studies and medical research. The garden atrium, which connects separate wings for teaching and research, fosters community and collaboration.
We provided structural design and façade engineering services for the project, which was designed by Safdie Architects. The project includes 40 classrooms, a 400-seat multipurpose auditorium and academic laboratories and simulation facilities.
highlights
- The vaulted glass roof structure of the atrium was designed to admit daylight while regulating heat gain and glare for occupant comfort.
- Our facades team used SOFiSTiK to analyze the gridshell roof, which includes spring stiffnesses for the support conditions and rotational stiffnesses at the nodes. The main gridshell members feature square hollow sections and measure 100x200mm.
- We analyzed internally and externally bolted nodes for their rotational stiffnesses in both strong and weak directions. Ultimately, we chose to use externally bolted nodes for the project.
