Green Hydrogen and the Energy Transition

Green hydrogen could play a pivotal role in the global shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energy sources (the energy transition). But scaling it will require overcoming key challenges.

Emily Kunkel, an associate principal in Thornton Tomasetti's Applied Science practice, addresses those challenges in USA Today’s Special Sustainability Edition (April 14, 2026), in the article “Hy-Powered.”

Emerging Applications and Challenges

Kunkel highlights emerging applications for green hydrogen, including its potential to decarbonize industrial processes and support long-duration energy storage.

The article also explores challenges that must be addressed for green hydrogen to become a mainstream energy solution.

“Hy-Powered” appears on page 30 of the Special Sustainability Edition.

Green hydrogen energy storage systems can allow for large-scale, long-duration energy storage at a lower levelized cost and higher energy density than batteries.
