Roux Institute Topping Off Marks Major Milestone in Northeastern University’s Campus Transformation
Roux Institute marked a major construction milestone with the topping off of the Alfond Center on its Portland, Maine, campus. The project is transforming the 13-acre former B&M Baked Beans factory site, originally built in 1913, into a state-of-the-art innovation hub that honors the site’s industrial legacy.
Thornton Tomasetti is providing structural design, vibration modeling, sustainability and resilience services to CambridgeSeven Architects for the project’s first phase, which includes a six-story academic building and a 608-space parking garage. The new building uses mass timber and high-cement replacement concrete to lower its embodied carbon footprint.
The 245,000-square-foot Alfond Center is scheduled to open in spring 2028.
