Reimagining BMO Field for Soccer, Football & Major Events
BMO Field opened in 2007 as Canada’s first soccer-specific stadium and home to the Canada men’s national soccer team and Toronto FC, the country’s first Major League Soccer franchise. We provided structural design services for phased renovations carried out between 2014 and 2016 to expand seating capacity and improve the fan experience ahead of Canadian Football League play and the 2016 Grey Cup.
Expanding Seating, Suites & Circulation Across the Stadium
Phase I removed seating at the north end and added 8,400 seats along the east and west sides. It also added 15 executive suites, restrooms and concessions, a second-level south concourse, and a new high-definition video board. These upgrades made BMO Field a more flexible venue for soccer, football, and other events.

Adding a Long-Span Roof Canopy to Improve Fan Experience
Phase II added a long-span roof canopy over the east, west, and south stands to improve weather protection and help contain crowd noise. The project team assembled the 980,000-pound south canopy on-site and lifted it into place as a single unit.
Building on BMO Field’s Legacy for FIFA World Cup 2026
We’re also providing structural engineering for stadium improvements ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026, including temporary tournament infrastructure, permanent upgrades, and follow-on reconfiguration work. The scope includes four new LED scoreboard enclosures, dugout covers, new VIP suites, foundations for a new semipermanent south concourse, a new northwest stair tower with permanent LED board, and vertical expansion of the northwest elevator to serve the new south concourse. These improvements will prepare BMO Field for World Cup operations and continue serving the stadium after it returns to regular club use.
