Thornton Tomasetti announces that Timothy D. Lynch, P.E., a recognized expert in building forensics and emergency response, has joined the firm’s Forensics practice as a senior vice president. Based in the New York office, Lynch will play a key role in furthering the strategic growth of the practice. In addition to project work with contractors, government agencies and other key clients, he will assist with internal and external education programs, research and development initiatives and business development.

“We are pleased to welcome Tim to the Forensics team,” said Thornton Tomasetti Managing Principal and New York Office Director James Feuerborn. “He brings an extensive technical background and industry knowledge to our team as we continue to increase our offerings and level of service to our clients.”

Lynch has more than 35 years of structural engineering experience. Prior to joining Thornton Tomasetti, he was chief enforcement engineer for the New York City Department of Buildings’ Investigative and Forensic Engineering Units, where he was involved in the development of building codes and laws, engineering audits, including those of complex building projects, and programs governing the structural behavior of the city’s more than one million buildings. He oversaw teams of engineering specialists responding to structural collapses, fires, construction accidents and natural disasters. He has extensive experience in issues related to façade and local law inspections, retaining walls, compromised buildings, concrete enforcement and cooling tower units. Lynch played leadership roles in the city’s response efforts in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

“It is an exciting time to be joining Thornton Tomasetti,” Lynch said. “A range of factors, including climate change and an aging building stock, is significantly impacting the built environment. Forensic engineering looks to find the cause of a problem, but it’s also about developing smarter solutions for tomorrow. I look forward to collaborating with the team to help our clients while making our communities safer.”

Lynch holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Queen’s University Belfast in Northern Ireland. He is a licensed professional engineer in New York and a certified Site Safety Manager. Tim is the Structural Engineers Association of New York 2022-23 Honorary Member and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
