Thornton Tomasetti announces that Warren D. Reid, CPEng, NER has joined the firm as an associate director in the Applied Science practice. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Reid will work with the Perth, Western Australia, and Edinburgh, U.K. teams to expand the firm’s defence service offerings in the region.

Reid has more than 30 years of experience in the defence industry and government sector. He is skilled in underwater shock testing, systems dynamics modelling, designing and leading research programs for a variety of vessels, and the performance of materials and their vulnerabilities to different types of attack. As an expert on defence science strategy and planning, Reid has received multiple awards and recognitions, including a Gold Commendation from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

“We are very pleased to have someone with Warren’s tremendous knowledge and vast background in the defence field join our team,” said Thornton Tomasetti Principal Andrew Nelson, who oversees our Perth and Sydney offices. “Warren has a deep understanding of the intricate and challenging defence landscape and has advised on and effectively led numerous significant projects in his career. We are confident Warren will build upon Thornton Tomasetti’s proven underwater shock testing, modelling and simulation and naval vessel design expertise.”

Prior to joining Thornton Tomasetti, Reid held a number of high-profile leadership positions during his 37-year career at the Defence Science and Technology Group (DST), an agency that is part of the Australian Department of Defence, and is dedicated to providing support for the country’s defence and national security needs. During his time at DST, Reid had been an advisor on many of their most important and challenging projects, including the new Attack-class submarines and Hunter-class frigates.

Commenting on his new role, Reid said: “Australia is making major changes to the way it approaches and develops its shipbuilding industry. The aim is to ensure that the industry is sustainable through a continuous naval ship building program and that the industry has the confidence to invest for the long term. There is a niche market allowing for Thornton Tomasetti to help Australia build a significant capability in assessing and improving the survivability of Australian Naval platforms.”

Thornton Tomasetti’s U.K. and Australian offices have collaborated on a series of defence projects in Australia, including the opportunity to introduce innovative shock testing and qualification methods for naval equipment, and proven approaches to modelling underwater shock, blast and collision dynamics.

Reid holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from the University of Melbourne. He also completed DST’s Graduate Program in Scientific Leadership as well as the Defence Senior Leadership and Development Programme. Reid is a member of Australia’s Institute of Engineers as well as Materials Australia, a professional association for materials scientists and engineers.
