Smith College's Kathleen McCartney Hall, a new mass timber hub for career development and leadership in Northampton, Massachusetts, was featured in The Architect's Newspaper.
Designed by TenBerke, the 15,000-square-foot building brings together the college’s Lazarus Center for Career Development and Wurtele Center for Leadership. The three-story, LEED Gold-certified facility incorporates a mass timber-hybrid structural system and a high-performance façade. Energy modeling and life-cycle analyses informed design decisions and building system selections, such as geothermal heating and cooling, as well as other strategies that support Smith College’s sustainability goals.
Thornton Tomasetti provided structural engineering, sustainability, and façade engineering for the building. Our multidisciplinary team supported the project from early concept through construction administration with integrated design thinking that maximized sustainability and streamlined coordination.
