Dennis led the structural design teams for four of China’s tallest buildings: Suzhou Zhongnan Center, Shanghai Tower, Wuhan Greenland Center and Ping An International Finance Center.

Dennis Poon has more than 38 years of experience in the structural engineering of a wide variety of building types, such as supertall structures, mixed-use buildings, hotels, airports, arenas and residential buildings worldwide. His expertise is in the application of state-of-the-art engineering technologies for building analysis, design and construction, including project delivery strategies. Dennis also has extensive experience in seismic design, structural investigations and optimization of structural systems.

In addition to his responsibilities as vice chairman of Thornton Tomasetti, Dennis leads projects throughout the world and is in charge of offices in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Supertall Expertise
High on his list of accomplishments is the role he played in leading the structural design teams for four of China’s tallest buildings: Suzhou Zhongnan Center (700+ meters), Shanghai Tower (632 meters), Wuhan Greenland Center (636 meters) and Ping An International Finance Center (600 meters). For his effort and contribution to supertall structure design, Engineering News-Record named him one of the 25 Top Newsmakers of 2010. He has also received numerous prestigious awards including the American Consulting Engineers Council National Grand Award for the design of Taipei 101.

Dennis is currently working on several other supertall buildings and mixed-use complexes such as the 112-story Signature Tower (638 meters) in Indonesia; the 100-story Chengdu Greenland Center in Chengdu, China; and other high-rise projects in the Middle East, South Korea and Vietnam.

Public Speaking and Education
He has lectured at universities worldwide including Delft Technical University in the Netherlands, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University. He presents his work frequently at industry conferences around the globe.

Outside of Work
When not traveling the world, Dennis unwinds by swimming laps as often as possible.
