We don't just design new buildings.

We are experts in seismic analysis and design. Our engineers have worked on major projects in high seismic zones around the globe, including California, Turkey, China, Taiwan, Mexico City, Indonesia, New Zealand, Japan, Chile, Haiti and Puerto Rico. Through our work investigating building performance during earthquakes and other natural and man-made disasters, we have developed a comprehensive understanding of how structures behave in real events.

Our understanding of earthquake hazards, construction techniques and structural analysis capabilities have evolved rapidly in the last 25 years, meaning that newer buildings are safer and more resilient than ever. But that also means that older buildings can be more vulnerable to significant damage and downtime during a seismic event. It's no secret that seismic retrofits can be costly and disruptive and tearing down these older buildings might be a tempting option, but retrofitting and reusing buildings is likely a far more sustainable choice.

We use the latest analytical techniques, apply performance-based design (PBD) principles, and have the ability to express complex technical issues in ordinary language. While many often think of PBD and advanced nonlinear analysis techniques in the context of new buildings, these tools were first developed with existing buildings in mind. Our engineers routinely use state-of-the art structural engineering software and are directly involved in developing seismic codes and best-practice evaluation guidelines.

One size does not fit all.

We pride ourselves in developing innovative solutions to complex engineering problems. To us, innovation does not just mean using the latest invention. It means getting involved early, listening to your needs, and helping you understand your risks and potential losses. We work with you to identify possible solutions and alternatives before deciding on the best approach. At every stage of the process, Thornton Tomasetti professionals are ready to guide you through a tailored solution that maximizes the return on your retrofit dollar.

For projects focused on mandatory retrofit requirements, our approach may be driven toward minimizing up-front construction costs and / or minimizing disruption to building operations while meeting the prescribed seismic safety standards.

If you are looking to optimize building performance in a catastrophe scenario, we can conduct more detailed analyses to estimate expected damage to the building in an earthquake and the resulting financial losses and building downtime. We work with you to identify thoughtful mitigation solutions informed by benefit-cost analysis and / or other performance measures suited to your needs.
