Corporate Responsibility

We aspire to be one of the most sustainable firms in the AEC world, in the way we design our projects and in how we operate as a responsible business. In embracing this challenge, we see an opportunity to lead by example.

Profits, people, and the planet

At Thornton Tomasetti, we borrow from the "Triple Bottom Line" approach to sustainability, meaning we measure our degree of sustainability by evaluating our performance by its effect on PROFITS, PEOPLE, and the PLANET. We believe in "doing well by doing good."

We are committed to achieving carbon neutral business operations by 2030 and to contribute as an integral team member to the vision of carbon neutral buildings by 2030. We endeavor to create a workplace that provides extraordinary opportunities for professional development, education and training; a healthy and supportive workplace environment; and ample opportunities to contribute to the communities where we work.

Our commitment to sustainability

Thornton Tomasetti is committed to achieving sustainability in the built environment and in our business operations. We set ambitious goals for sustainability and regularly measure our progress towards these goals. We are unique among AEC firms in having a department dedicated to corporate responsibility.

Designing Sustainable Buildings

We were the first primarily structural engineering firm to join the AIA 2030 Commitment in support of the vision of carbon-neutral buildings by 2030. We contribute to this transformation through our Sustainability practice’s consulting services and through our efforts to calculate and reduce the environmental footprint of all our building design projects.

Greening our Business Operations

Towards our goal of carbon neutral business operations by 2030, we are reducing energy consumption and waste from our offices as well as providing incentives to reduce emissions from employee commuting. We offset CO2 emissions from all air travel through donations to support energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Our Green Champions are assisting their office’s implementation of our sustainable operations guidelines and receive green office grants to support their initiatives.

Contributing to Our Communities

Thornton Tomasetti employees generously donate their time and expertise to our communities, on and off the clock, and to charitable programs. Our Volunteer Day benefit provides 8 hours paid-time to employees for volunteering in their local community, and the corporation generously contributes to charities and will match employee donations.

The Thornton Tomasetti Foundation, a 501(c)(3), provides support to students and to philanthropic activities related to building engineering, design or technology.

Taking Care of Our Employees

Our employees are passionately creative, technically savvy, and care about the environment and a good quality of life. We want our employees to do the best work of their life at Thornton Tomasetti, and we offer unique benefits to keep job satisfaction high. We support research and development; offer diverse opportunities for training and continuing education; and work to improve employee comfort in their workspace.

Green champions

Our Green Champions are passionate employees from across the firm who volunteer to coordinate corporate responsibility initiatives in their office. We have Green Champions in 25 of our offices, across the U.S. and in China, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and India.
